Agate,
a semi-precious stone, is a microcrystalline variety of quartz,
its main make-up is chalcedony, with its fine grain and bright
colors. Although agates may be found in various kinds of rock,
they are mainly associated with
volcanic rock, but can be commonly found in certain metamorphic rocks.
Most
agates occur as nodules in ancient volcanic rocks, formed in
cavities originally produced by the disengagement of gasses
in the
molten lava mass
which were then filled by silica matter deposited in regular
layers upon the cavity walls. Such agates, when cut exhibit a
succession of parallel lines, often giving a banded appearance
to the slice.
