The Aztec moon goddess Coyolxauhqui, a circular stone 3.3 meters (11 feet) across and weighing approximately 20 tons, has relief images of the dismembered goddess's limbs, torso and head scattered across its surface. Depicting a well-known episode from Aztec mythology, when the mother of the gods was pregnant for the last time, and her other offspring - the planets and stars became so jealous that they plotted to kill her. At the moment of matricide, the newly born war and sun god, Huitzilopochtli leaped from the womb and avenged his mother by killing his murderous siblings. The victims of his rage unfortunately included the beautiful Coyolxauhqui, who was cut into pieces. This is why, according to Aztec legend, the moon starts off full each month, then gradually diminishes in size.
